Turf grass lawns are an ecological disaster
Traditional lawns are ecologically unproductive monocultures and poorly suited to our semi-arid climate. They are resource and water intensive, require frequent mowing, irrigation, and chemical inputs, yet offer little ecological benefit. Even heat-adapted, low water varieties require excessive irrigation, fertilizer, and maintenance while providing little benefit to the surrounding environment.
Artificial grass might seem like a low-maintenance solution, but it’s even worse for the environment than the real thing. It sheds microplastics, contributes to heat buildup, harms soil life, and has to be landfilled at the end of its short lifespan. While traditional grass lawns provide little ecological benefit, artificial grass causes ecological harm.
There are better options.
We offer several alternatives to traditional turf grass lawns that are aesthetically pleasing, ecologically beneficial, and more appropriate for our semi-arid climate.
The simplest and most affordable is to overseed your existing lawn with ground covers and native wildflowers. This easy solution drastically improves the ecological value of your outdoor space and brings an evolving palette of colour to your yard. Going further, we can replace existing turf grass with a mix of native and climate adapted non-invaside species that are low growing and tolerate being walked on.
Stop polluting the environment and wasting water, time, and money mowing, watering, and maintaining your lawn. Replace or improve it with native or climate adapted ground covers and native wildflowers!
